HISTORY
The property dates back to 1865 when my great-great-grandfather Dr. Cav. Alessandro Bizzarri, a chemist at the Sorbonne in Paris, founder of the Consorzio Agrario di Firenze and owner of the pharmacy of the same name, in Piazza della Signoria in Florence, specializing in spices and agricultural products, decided to test his agricultural skills, already consolidated by a long collaboration with the Castello di Brolio and Baron Bettino Ricasoli, in the development of the recipe for Chianti wine.
This is how he purchased the Castello di Strozzavolpe in Poggibonsi and all the surrounding farms for the production of wine, vermouth and experimented with new fermentation techniques; together with the engineer Perriolt he developed the first electric pump for pumping over. He wrote many scientific publications and pamphlets; and many experiments in the field that he will carry out until his death in 1896. The subsequent generations, and the heirs of Bizzarri did not follow in his footsteps, but they maintained the property by dividing it among the heirs and today with my family we represent the fifth generation.
My grandmother Lucia Bizzarri with my grandfather Domenico Lazzareschi, were painters and artists and more than to agriculture they dedicated themselves to representing the territory, the countryside and the peasant world of the last century, filling the villa with drawings and paintings. My father Luigi Lazzareschi, architect and professor of ancient history at the University of Florence, then resumed agricultural activities with the creation of a new vineyard and the production of Terre di Siena dop evo oil.
TODAY
Today, with my husband Dr. Cav. Eduardo Di Ciommo and my son Lorenzo Maria, we are renovating and expanding the company. With the restoration of the villa and the park and the purchase of new vineyards, we are making our dream come true. The villa and the park open to welcome our guests in our Boutique Hotel; allowing them to spend pleasant and relaxing days of vacation. We personally grow our grapes, our olive trees and fruits and vegetables. We produce Chianti Docg and Igt Toscana wine. We produce Dop Terre di Siena oil, and from our garden we have fresh and seasonal products every day. We make jams, jellies and preserves. We also have an Educational Farm open to schools and our guests. Here, animals die of old age! We have ornamental chickens, geese of various breeds and sizes, rabbits, pigeons and a cow and a sheep.
We organize events, tastings, tours and weddings.
We are firm supporters of the union between tradition and innovation in agriculture, in full respect of nature and its balances.
THE PROPERTY
Our lands extend between the hills of the Sienese Chianti, between Poggibonsi and Cedda and between Strozzavolpe and Agresto. We have 90 hectares of mixed and coppice woodland, 30 hectares of arable land, 10 hectares of olive grove and 10 hectares of vineyard. The ridge has an east-west exposure, the altitude varies between 250 and 340 meters above sea level. From our vineyards in Fontaccia, near Cedda, the Borro di Santa Lucia is born, which in the Fossoli area flows into the Elsa river.
THE VINEYARDS
Fontaccia, Massaccio, Rosina Law, Pian dei Meli and Le Grotte are the names of our vineyards distributed on the property between Cedda and Fossoli. Fontaccia is our youngest vineyard, planted in 2004 by my father Luigi. Two hectares of Sangiovese and Colorino. The other vineyards, always with Sangiovese, Canaiolo but also with Trebbiano and Malvasia, are splendid 60-year-olds, leading to the Grotte vineyard, with vines over ninety years old: Sangiovese, Pugnitello, Foglia Tonda, Canaiolo Nero and Bianco, ancient varieties of Trebbiano Toscano, Trebbiano Rosa and Malvasia.
THE OLIVE TREES
Already in the garden of the house, and then expanding throughout the property, we have our olive trees reborn after the famous frost of 1985, but some are centuries-old because they were saved. Buchetta, Poggino, Stoppiola di sopra e sotto, Val di Terzi, Fontaccia are some of the names of our olive groves. We grow the varieties Correggiolo, Frantoio, Moraiolo, Maurino, Pendolino.
EDUCATIONAL FARM
Cosimo, Nerina, Gina, Cocy, Neve, Isabella and Petro, Ping and Wang, Le livornesi, Gisella and Giovanna, Mara, Olivia, Bruce, Diana, Wayne, Dafne, Fiocco, are some of our animals present on the Farm. A Dexter cow, a Bergamo sheep, various breeds of geese, ornamental chickens and land turtles, rabbits and pigeons. They grow up free and feed only on organic, natural or spontaneous products. My husband and I are passionate about ornamental poultry and have a large collection. We produce eggs from chickens and geese. Our motto is: our animals die of old age!
We organize visits for schools and educational activities to discover how animals are made and how they live in their natural environment. We promote experiences aimed at understanding agriculture, specifically the cultivation of olive trees and vines.
